Thanksgiving trip to Old Speck.Old Speck via AT. 7.8mi, 2664', 5:08. Instead of going climbing on Thanksgiving Monday, MP and I hike Old Speck, which is my last New England 4000-footer. The weather was better than I anticipated, but perhaps not great for climbing anyway---a bit damp. The weekend would have been good for climbing, but I was fighting the Quebec Open.
- Cost of picture: one sandwich
Bastardly gray jay ate my lunch while I took this photo! - I thought this would be a nice picture from the tower, so I interrupted my eating of a sandwich to take it. A gray jay noticed my inattention and snatched the remaining 1/8th sandwich from my hand. "Bastard!" MP was cracked up.
- MP admiring colours
The last NE 4000 footer for me!
- Gas pumps at US/Canada border
Gas pumps at US/Canada border. - We took the border crossing at Rt. 141, since it was on our route. It was good that we had a small crossing with a 10-minute wait; large crossings had 2-hour waits. Just before the crossing (on the US side) someone had once tried to run a gas station.
Per NBC, we're looking at early-70s gas prices.
